By Sydney Taylor
Age Range: 10 and UP
It is 1912 and the five daughters of an immigrant family
living on
New York’s
Lower East Side are growing up in a home poor in income but rich
in affection. The small problems that can deeply trouble a
child—like the loss of a library card—are overcome in the
context of an understanding and caring family; and the hopes of
these girls as to careers, weddings, and adulthood in general
are lovingly described.
Apricots at Midnight
by
Adèle Geras
Age Range: 8 and UP
A delightful tapestry of a magical, lost-world society
comes together in this poetic and humorous story for children.
The amazing tales behind the squares of this wonderful and
time-worn quilt are unraveled: a red velvet patch recalls an
exquisite dress ball and a magical
midnight feast with a highwayman, while a square of green brocade
carries memories of Captain Tramlemousse, a pirate. Children
will immerse themselves in the beautiful language and
fantastical characters of this beautifully written book.
Adele Geras has written more than 80 children's books,
including My Wishes for You, Rebecca's Passover, and
Troy.
Arnold the Smiling Horse
by Karine Nguyen-Tuong
Arnold the Smiling Horse, by Karine Nguyen-Tuong, a
schoolteacher in Charlottesville, Virginia is the story of a
young horse that lives on
Winged
Horse
Island. Born without wings,
Arnold goes searching for his wings and for answers to his many
questions. Through his travels, he learns that one of his
special qualities will take him as far as his wings would, if
not farther.
Arnold the Smiling Horse is a tender story that touches the
adult as much as the child. In these times of war and
dissention, it is wonderful as well as reassuring to be reminded
of the power of the smile. Nguyen-Tuong's photographs of the
Outer Banks Winged Horse Extravaganza horses provide beautiful
images for this book.
Karine Nguyen-Tuong is a language teacher in a private
school in Charlottesville, Virginia who has noticed more and
more students having trouble using their imagination. She
believes that through using photography to "illustrate" her
stories, she can help her readers connect with something real in
order to allow themselves to be transported into an imaginary
world.

Baker's Dozen
In 13 Days, Justin Baker and the World Will Change
By Joshua Matthew Moorhead
Age Range: 13 and UP
The Fresh Voices series was inspired by a writing contest
of the same name that identified high school writers interested
in composing book-length works for young adults. Working with a
professional editor, the young authors spent the summer learning
about the book industry and meeting journalists while writing
their individual books, both fiction and nonfiction. The four
titles in this series represent the first four winners of the
contest.
A high school student's search for identity unfolds in
the backdrop of the chaos and tragedy of 9/11 in this honest and
heartfelt novel by a recent high school graduate. Love, faith,
animosity, and friendship struggle for balance as protagonist
Justin Baker works through the 13 seminal days of his senior
year. Already ensconced in a sometimes-bewildering life of high
school intrigue, nocturnal pranks, and chance encounters with
Vanilla Ice, the tragedy of 2001 informs Justin's rite of
passage into adulthood, inspiring him to discover himself and
the purpose of society. Written as a series of journal entries,
teenagers will be moved by the intimacy of the language and the
unique vividness of 9/11 as it is experienced though the eyes of
a 17-year-old.
Joshua Matthew Moorhead is a student at
Ohio
State
University. He lives in Hartville, Ohio.
