REVIEWS

Children's Book:

The Flower Ball

"A moral tale whose decor is just as impeccable as its lesson." - Publishers Weekly

"Children will be charmed and encouraged by this unusual flight of floral fancy."- School Library Journal

"A sophisticated version of the theme of learning tolerance" - National Center for the study of Children’s literature

"Whimsical and beautifully drawn, this is a tale of Cauliflower and Carrot, two vegetables who want to attend a "flower-only" ball. Marigold and Rose are scandalized when the vegetables show up, but they quickly come to enjoy the unique fun the veggies bring, despite differences." - Scholastic Parent & Child

"A charming story that introduces notions of acceptance to young children." - OC Family magazine

Children's Book:

The Love For Three Oranges

"Set within the framework of a commedia dell’arte performance, the fairy tale is gracefully told, but the elegant illustrations by Polish artist Gaudasinska steal the show. Fine lines, elongated forms, and a subtle, delicate palette create artwork that is sophisticated yet comical and appealing." - Booklist

"There’s no getting around the surreal, mosaic quality of this tale, with its odd juxtapositions and dream illogic. But it made a fun opera, and it makes a rather delightful tale for children, too... Children (and adults) willing to set aside logic for a time will enjoy themselves mightily." - Kirkus Review

"Lively and appealing... this book will be especially useful for music teachers introducing opera to young audiences." - School Library Journal

Children's Book:

The Boy and the Spell

(too new for reviews)

"Time, I hate time. I wish there were no such thing called time!"

Having trouble with homework, Thomas takes out his frustration on the things around him—his books, his clock, his furniture. But one afternoon, Armchair bellows, “My stuffing has had enough!” Armchair blows Thomas “clear out of this world…into a strange place in time,” where numerals scatter, book characters come alive, and cakes fight back.

Will Thomas ever return home?

The Boy and the Spell is adapted from the opera L’Enfant et les Sortileges (1925) by prominent French composer Maurice Ravel, with a libretto by Colette. Scholars have compared this opera to Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are; Sendak himself created the set designs and costumes for the production of this opera staged in the late twentieth century.

Whimsically illustrated by Italian artist Serena Riglietti, The Boy and the Spell has been selected for the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition. The adaptation is written by an award-winning children’s author Pegi Deitz Shea."
